The Gaelic Hour is a twice weekly radio show that is broadcast on CJLL CHIN 97.9FM Ottawa and is produced and presented by Austin Comerton. It has been airing since September 2005. These shows also stream live and are archived on this site for one week after broadcast. The show now airs at 8:00am on Sunday and 10:00pm on Monday.
The Sunday show follows a magazine format and has featured actors, musicians, authors, diplomats, politicians and many other interesting guests. These have included An Taoiseach, Brian Cowan; Ontario Premier Dalton McGuintey, Irish Government Ministers Michael Martin T.D. and Noel Tracey T.D. Artists like Christ Moore, Mary Black, Paddy Moloney, Sharon Shannon, Daniel O'Donnell, Great Big Sea, John McDermott, Tony Allen and the Celtic Tenors. Authors Hugo Hamilton, John Doyle, Caroline Pignat and John Furlong of VANOCwere also guests on the program.
The topics have ranged from early fishermen migration to Newfoundland, immigration to Quebec before and during the famine and current business and enterprise initiatives between Ireland and Canada. Alex Rankin, Architect, was interviewed on his role in the design of the Canadian War Museum and many local and visiting guests have shared their stories.
The Monday Show is devoted to music and presents a varied selection of styles. This acts as a good contrast to the Monday Show and gives air to Irish, Scottish and Canadian artists. The music featured on the shows are listed on a playlist and approximately 25% of the web visitors view the playlist.
This website has been attracting an increasing number of visitors from around the world. Podcasts are also now available of previously aired shows.
